The Salient is the easiest of the two sectors to do well in a short time, and the reason is geography. Ypres sits in the middle of it, and almost everything worth seeing is a short drive out and back. You can take one hotel for both nights, leave the car in the town in the evenings, and walk to dinner. The Somme does not work like that.

Two full days is the right length. One day is enough to see the headline sites and not enough to understand them; three begins to repeat itself unless you have a particular reason to stay. Allow three nights if you want two clear days on the ground rather than one and two halves spent travelling.

The fixed point in the Salient is the Last Post under the Menin Gate, sounded every evening of the year at eight o’clock. It is free and it needs no ticket, and the itinerary is planned around being in town for it rather than treating it as an afterthought. It is also the one part of the trip where being early genuinely matters.

What the pack adds to a list of places is the order, the timings and the practicalities: which of the big sites to be at before the coaches, how long each one actually takes, where to leave the car, and where Peter eats and drinks when he is here. Travel and hotels you book yourself.

Who it suits

  • A first visit to the Western Front
  • Anybody with a name on the Menin Gate or at Tyne Cot
  • People who would rather unpack once and stay put
  • A long weekend rather than a week

Questions Peter gets asked

Do I need a car?

Yes. This is a self-drive itinerary. The sites are spread across farmland outside the town and there is no useful public transport between them. Most people bring their own car through the tunnel.

Is two days really enough?

For the Salient, yes, and comfortably so if both days are clear ones. The sites sit close together, which is exactly what makes this the sector to start with.

Will you find my relative’s grave?

Not as part of this pack, which is a fixed itinerary sold many times over. Family research is part of a custom tour, where Peter will try to find where a man is buried or commemorated and build the visit into your days. Even a name and a regiment is usually enough to start.

Does it suit children?

It can, and the trench and museum sites hold their attention better than the cemeteries do. Nothing in the itinerary needs a long walk.

When is the best time of year to go?

Spring and early autumn, if the choice is yours. Summer is busier and the big memorials fill up; the week around Armistice Day is busiest of all and worth going for anyway if the date means something to you.

What people say about Peter’s tours

These are from travellers Peter has guided in person. The packs are the same itineraries, written up so you can drive them yourself.

“Pete Jefferies delivers a professional WW1 tour. He has a great passion for the subject and his knowledge is very in depth. He organised an excellent itinerary which covered all the main topics and sites of WW1. His choice of hotels and authentic Flemish restaurants were great. The whole experience was unforgettable.”
Darren Eaton, Bristol · Ypres & the Somme, 2023
“I have been on a tour organised by Pete Jefferies and thoroughly enjoyed it — I am booked again for 2027. The itineraries have been well organised and could be changed if required but never rushed. Visits were well planned, whether it was a museum, a graveyard, the Menin Gate or the Thiepval Memorial.”
Basil Sweet, Bristol · Ypres & the Somme, 2024 and 2025
“I have been on several WW1 battlefield and cemetery tours with Pete Jefferies, covering areas in Belgium and France. The tours are well organised with itineraries that fill the days perfectly, including stops for lunch, and they can be adapted to take any weather or traffic issues on board at short notice. His knowledge and enthusiasm are very obvious too.”
Alan Waller, Essex · Ypres & the Somme, 2014 and 2023
“An excellent battlefield tour of Ypres and the Somme. The itinerary covered an impressive range of sites throughout both of these locations. The whole experience was informative, engaging and thoughtfully put together, bringing the history of these remarkable places to life. Peter knew so much information about each location.”
Mike Cordery, Norfolk · Ypres & the Somme, 2023
